Australia is the sixth largest country in the world and the only one that occupies the continent with the same name. Its territory includes the island of Tasmania, which is an Australian state. In the vicinity are located New Zealand and Indonesia to southeast, and Papua New Guinea and East Timor to the north.

Australia is a parliamentary monarchy. Until the early 20th century Australia is a colony of Britain. It obtained its independence in 1931. In 1999 the state held a referendum on its planning and management and Australians are choosing to remain part of the composition of the Commonwealth. Thus, the country’s head of state is the Queen. She was elected by Parliament appointed Governor-General. As a form of internal polity Australia is a federal state.

The name Australia comes from the Latin phrase terra australis incognita, which means unknown southern land. The first settlers were natives. Only in the era of the great sailors, the colonization and the exploration of the shores of the continent began.

Because of its remoteness the continent become home to natural forms and bizarre animals that are not found elsewhere. Ayers rock, big mountain watershed, kangaroos, platypus and many types of make that place so interesting destination for tourists from around the world.
